Lowly Oatmeal

It’s what’s for breakfast in my house. I often get asked what I like for a quick breakfast option and this is it. In the winters months, at least.

I buy large wholesale bags of whole oats and keep a small container of them on my kitchen counter. Then, I measure out about 1/2 cup of them into a cereal bowl and pour over some boiling water. I then cover the bowl with a plate and let it sit for 5 minutes. Voila! Perfectly cooked oatmeal ready to be topped with some brown sugar and a wee bit of milk or cream. A slice of buttered rye toast on the side and I’m a happy lady.

Oats, themselves are amazing for you. They are like tiny sponges that soak up cholesterol in your body and carry it away. Some experts believe that it’s the soluble fiber found in oats that does this. Whatever it is, it’s been proven to be one of the healthiest whole grains we can eat.

Eat up!
